Sunday, April 27, 2008What Is This Strange Temptation Misery Holds For You?
---Quote From Tess by Thomas Hardy---
Definition: a height of land in extreme southwestern Grant Co., 5 miles from the Mississippi. From Increase Lapham's 1844 Geographical and Topographical Description of Wisconsin: "SINSINIWA CREEK runs south, through township one, range one west, and is a tributary of Fever river, in Illinois. The Sinsiniwa Mound, from which this creek derives its name, is one of those isolated, conical elevations so remarkable in this country, situated near the State line, five miles from the Mississippi. The Menomonee creek, runs between this mound and the river." [Source: Rodolf, Theodore. "Pioneering in the Wisconsin lead region" at Turning Points in Wis. History]

Jan. 4: Police drag the river in a final daily search for Kruziki with no results.
On Saturday, March 18, 2006, a water plane pilot flying low over the Mississippi River in Illinois noticed Matt's body floating in the water. Investigators are still trying to determine how Matt got into the water. An autopsy conducted by a Rockford, IL medical examiner found alcohol and marijuana in his system, however police chief Steve O'Connell said, "The alcohol level is in the area of what we thought it might be because of the fact that officers did have contact with him that night. He didn't appear to be inebriated beyond where he wouldn't have been able to make conscious decisions."

What's The Deal With The Number 11?
Does the number 11 signify anything either symbolically or otherwise in the case of the Smiley Face Murders? There are many instances of the number 11 particularly in the dates of the deaths of these college men. I will elaborate on this and will list all of the 11's in this case in a future post.
Smiley Sesame Street Character
The Symbolism and Spiritual Significance of the Number 11
Compiled by Dee Finney
Number Eleven possesses the qualities of intuition, patience, honesty, sensitivity, and spirituality, and is idealistic. Others turn to people who are 'Eleven' for teaching and inspiration, and are usually uplifted by the experience.
In systems such as Astrology and basic Numerology, eleven is considered to be a Master Number. Eleven can also represent sin; transgression and peril. Ten being the perfect number, eleven represents the exceeding of both.
It is interesting to note that eleven when broken down ( 1+1=2) comprises the Two of duality. Number eleven is a master vibration and as such should not be reduced to a single number.
What's The Deal With The Smiley Face?
Why would the alleged murderers of the college students use a smiley face as a clue? I have no idea at this time. Let's look at some smiley faces in the news and the history of the smiley face.

By Ken Cates, Bitwise Gifts
The irresistible smiley face flowed from the pen of Harvey Ball, a graphic artist in Worcester, Massachusetts. The year was 1963. Harvey was hired by the State Mutual Life Assurance Company to design a logo that would uplift its employees after a company merger had hurt company morale. The logo was to accompany a "friendship campaign" that the company came up with to encourage employees to smile as they went about their work or interacted with customers.
Thinking about what would inspire employees to smile, Harvey decided the most simple and direct symbol would be a smile itself and that is what he drew. A simple smile, and two eyes, not too perfect, but appealing in its simplicity. He made the background yellow, like a bright cheery sun. Harvey was paid a $45 fee for his timeless creation. State Mutual originally ordered 100 button pins with the logo for its employees, but the symbol became so popular with workers, customers, and agents, that they were soon ordering them by the thousands. The smiley face has now become a cultural icon.
Later in life, Harvey said, "Never in the history of mankind or art has any single piece of art gotten such widespread favor, pleasure, enjoyment, and nothing has ever been so simply done and so easily understood in art." The original button pin was actually rather tiny, only 7/8 inches across, made of metal, and with a straight pin on the back. The backside had the wording: "The SMILE insurance companies, WORCESTER MUTUAL, GUARANTEE MUTUAL, STATE MUTUAL OF AMERICA." Read the Complete Article
Nano Smiley Faces
Nanoscale Smiley Faces Abound April 11, 2008
Caltech researcher Paul Rothemund folds DNA strands into an origami of nanosize shapes and patterns. By John Eischeid. View slideshow Paul Rothemund is a computer scientist and an artist, although not necessarily in that order. Using a few DNA molecules, an atomic force microscope and a computer, he can fit the likenesses of 50 billion smiley faces into a space no bigger than a drop of water.Rothemund refers to his brew of art, biology and technology as "DNA origami," because it is created by using hundreds of short DNA strands (which Rothemund refers to as "staples") to fold much longer genetic ribbons into nanoscale shapes and patterns. The resulting microscopic creations are currently on display through May 12 at MoMA–The Museum of Modern Art in New York City as part of the "Design and the Elastic Mind" exhibit. The show includes images of snowflakes and maps—not to mention 1970s-inspired smiley faces, which are only about 100 nanometers across (one one-thousandth the width of a human hair), two nanometers thick and comprise about 14,000 DNA Bases. Call it the art of science or, if you prefer, the science of art. Read the Complete Article
Smiley Face On Mars (Or Hoax?)
Smiley alien face appears on Mars
Just weeks after a strange figure, of what appeared to be a alien walking on Mars emerged, there's now been a second 'contact.' This time a huge smiley face has appeared on the red planet. Once again, some think this is a message from alien life - for others it's just a random smiley faced shape on Mars. Let the debate continue! Original Article
Smiley Face Bomber (The Midwest Pipe Bomber)
Lucas John Helder (born May 5, 1981) was a University of Wisconsin-Stout college student and Pine Island, Minnesota resident who earned notoriety as the Midwest Pipe Bomber of May, 2002. Helder's plan was to plant pipe bombs in mailboxes across the United States to create a smiley face shape on the United States map. The bombs, which were packed with BBs and nails, were rigged to explode as the mailboxes were opened. Completed and rigged bombs were found in Nebraska, Colorado, Texas, Illinois, and Iowa. In Iowa, six people, including four mail carriers, were injured when the bombs detonated. Ultimately, Helder planted 18 bombs and covered 3,200 miles. He was eventually captured in rural Nevada before he managed to complete the full smile. At the time of his arrest, police were looking for an unknown suspect driving around in a black Honda Accord and newspapers reported that he was wearing a Kurt Cobain T-Shirt. The bombings were heavily covered by the United States media.

Great post Daria. One of your images is exactly what I didn't know I was looking for. Welcome to my/our synchronistic world!

Wow! I'm impressed with your work, though I'm not sure I see anything in the "11" theory.
THANKS for covering this awful story. How sad -- and creepy! On my blog, The Sope-Bocks, there is a list of potential victims' names, along with a couple of theories -- and lots of other stuff related to the Smiley Face Gang. I may have missed some evidence available to the public, but no other blog has more data available right now.
BTW, Huffpo, WebSleuths and a coupla others are developing the story, too. I think the you, me and other bloggers are going to crack the case -- sooner or later. At least, that's my hope!

Great work Daria! Nicely done.
Look forward to reading more from you! I had not heard of the Smiley Face Murders until now, intriguing!

Forgive my ignorance to these cases (and perhaps I missed something in my read of your piece). What connection or significance is placed on the Smiley face???
I didn't see anything where that is explained.
Good stuff though!
